Jane Lou King

December 20, 1938  -  July 4, 1955

Jane Lou King died on July 4, 1955, in Stamford, Texas at age 16 years, from Leukemia, diagnosed over a year earlier. Jane had continued her studies at home after she became ill and completed her sophomore year at Lueders High School. Several of her classmates were pallbearers at her funeral: Bobby Culver, Steve Miller, Jerry Reves, Harry Garvin, Butch Lewis, and Rayford Kelly. Jane was buried in the Rockdale Cemetery not far from her home.

Family:  Parents: Raymond D. and Solla Williams King. Father died May 19, 1977, Mother died January 4, 1975. Jane had one older sister, Rayleen King Pittcock, Lueders Class of 1953, who resides in Seymour, Texas. Jane was raised on a farm in the Ericksdahl Community.

Church Affiliation:     Church of Christ

Schools Attended:     Started first grade at Swenson School in Ericksdahl Community at age 5 and then attended Paint Creek School through spring of 1949, then Lueders Public Schools. Jane was very studious and was always on the A honor roll. She participated in most extracurricular school activities. She was active in church, 4-H and enjoyed all sports.

Jane was ill and confined to her bed for several months and in and out of hospitals, but through all this, she was never discouraged and always maintained a positive attitude. The type of Leukemia Jane suffered was hereditary - her mother, aunt, and several cousins died of this disease. In the early fifties, genetic research on Jane’s cancer, and other affected family, was the first documented study proving cancer was an inheritable trait within families. Extensive research has been done on this strain of Leukemia and great advances have been made in treatment. We are very grateful that no new cases in our family have diagnosed in the last twenty years. Jane suffered greatly from this horrible disease and went through constant painful testing - we hope her valiant struggle with this disease helped to discover new methods and develop drugs to enable others to live a healthy life.
