Harry Burton Garvin

Date Of Birth:  August 31, 1938

Family:  My Dad, Leon, died in January 1994 and my Mother, Lessie, who was born in 1911 is still living. I was the fourth of nine children. My brothers and sisters are: Fred, Tommy, Robbie, Carol, Rex, Leon, Rose and Becky. All are living except Carol, who died in September of 98. I married Doris Shott of Lueders on September 1, 1956. Doris and I have six children. They are: Burt, Tamra Burkman, Kenneth, Deborah Hinely, Rebecca Murray and Angie Davis. We are expecting our eleventh grandchild next year (1999).

Church Affiliation:    I gave my life to the Lord Jesus in the First Baptist Church of Lueders in August 1947.

                                   Lueders High School  -  Lueders, Texas
                                   I attended Cisco Junior College and ran track there in 1957 & 58.
                                   I graduated from Howard Payne in 1961 and from Southwestern Seminary in 1969.

Occupation:  Bible Teacher, Discipler, Pastor and Missionary in Uganda, East Africa from 1970 to 1996.

Places I Lived:  Lueders, TX - Cisco, TX - Brownwood, TX - Bangs, TX - Fort Worth, Texas - Dermott, Arkansas - Uganda and Kenya, East Africa.

Hobbies or Favorite Pastimes:  Farming and ranching, reading, walking, bow hunting and fishing.

Travels:  Doris and I have traveled over much of the U.S.A., Great Britain, Greece, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Malawi, South Africa. Sudan, and Switzerland.

A Little History Of My Life:  I grew up on a farm near Lueders, the fourth of nine children. I married Doris Shott, my high school sweetheart. After pastoring in the states, Doris and our children and I went to Uganda as missionaries in May 1970. The first eight years of our missionary career were under the rule of the dictator, Idi Amin, under whose rule 500,000 people were murdered. God spared our lives during those turbulent years. I was medically retired because of melanoma cancer in 1995.

Special Accomplishments:  Bachelor of Science at Howard Payne University, Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 26 years as a Missionary in Uganda where I worked with over 200 churches.
