The eccentric made the rod lines running to the oil wells go back and forth and then through the Pump Jack at the oil well the motion was transferred to an up and down one for the rods in the well to operate a piston pump in the bottom of the well. The types of eccentric varied widely from the one shown here which required a very large power house to enclose the eccentric wheel and protect the drive belt from the weather. Other types of eccentrics were gear and shaft driven and could be installed outside the engine shed.
